Juniper Season Opener - Results are in!

The Juniper Golf Club 2008 season opener faced some daunting weather challenges but came off without a hitch. Unseasonably cold weather and biting winds couldn't stop the powerhouse team of Matt Harcourt, Linda Oliver, Bill Frost and Marian Gabriel from claiming the top prize with a sparkling 64 to win the Gross Division.

The Four Kings, Dave, Janet, Mike and Cindy dazzled the field with a gross 65 and a net 59 to capture low net of the tournament. Full field results should be posted shortly.

The great thing about the opener was EVERYONE won when they got into the clubhouse and enjoyed the fabulous Italian Feast that Chef Carrie DaCruz and her staff prepared for our enjoyment. For those of us who finished early it was 3 1/2 hours of eating the multi-course meal, starting with antipasto, breads, and cheese and finishing off with tiramisu, cheese cake and lemon torts. It was a meal to remember (as my scales will aptly do for awhile).

You better get the Season Closer on your calendar now...you will not want to miss it. There is lots of great golf action inbetween the Opener and Closer and so be sure an sign up for these fun events and enjoy the camraderie, fun and food.

Don't forget the couples two-ball events start May 2nd and there will be a special early Cinco De Mayo meal after the event. These are great little mini-tournaments each Friday night during the summer season and everyone should take advantage of them and bring guests to introduce them to the club. Check with the Pro Shop for a complete schedule of these Friday Night Fights...Hit and Giggle...or whatever you would like to call them! They really are fun.

Tom DeHart Captures KP with Ace!
George Owens' tee shot on #16 lipped out and disappeared behind the hole, 1/2 inch from an ace. Two groups later comes Tom DeHart. Tom knocks the ball in the hole and George's KP is gone. Congratulations to Tom DeHart for making his second hole-in-one. Tom's 4 iron shot from 178 yards on the 16th hole at Juniper was his second ace in 55 years of playing golf. His first was just last year. Nice shot George but it's just not the same as an ace. Congratulation to Tom DeHart!
After 38 years, An Ace for Lois Northrup!
Lois Northrup took advantage of her participation in the club championships by making her first hole-n-one in 38 years of playing golf. Lois knocked her 7 iron shot on #16 from 139 yards right into the hole. The roar was heard across the golf course and at the clubhouse. A diner asked, "What's going on out there?" Gosh this golf stuff is exciting.
Bruce Sundseth Announces Hole-In-One!
Bruce Sundseth said he hit it in the head but the 9 iron shot went right into the hole on #3 for his third lifetime ace. Bruce has been playing golf for 35 years and said he's now one ace ahead of son, Tim. The 9 iron shot was holed from 146 yards. Curt Peterson contests the "in the head" remark. Curt said, "It was a beautiful shot." Congratulations to Bruce!

One Ball Rule

     Several people have asked about having to play the same make of golf ball during a round of golf. The USGA rules allow you to use any ball on it's approved ball list whenever substitution is allowed (between holes, when ball is damaged, etc). Some events, like PGA Tour events, use what is called "The One Ball Rule". This rule does NOT apply unless the tournament committee imposes this one ball rule in it's local rules or conditions of the competition.

     In the back of the USGA Rule Book, in Appendix I, the USGA suggests and writes that during a stipulated round, the balls a player plays must be of the same brand and model as detailed by a single entry on the List of Conforming Golf Balls. (Here is the link to the List of Conforming Golf Balls. It changes occasionally.) That means if you play a PRO V1x for your first shot, you must play a PRO V1x for every shot of your stipulated round.

     This "One Ball Rule" is usually just used for competitions with advanced players but the committee could do it for any event. It must be listed in the local rules for the competition. Otherwise, if you start with a Titleist, you could switch to a Callaway, Nike or any ball of your choice when the rules allow you to substitute a ball (like between holes).

Amended to allow a player to lift his ball for identification in a hazard (see corresponding change to Rule 15-3, removing the exemption from penalty for playing a wrong ball in a hazard).
